Kenpo can be translated as the 'Law of the Fist' , or 'Chinese fist'. BCC Kenpo stresses a mix of 'hard' and 'soft' techniques. The student's initial training is the understanding of the kihon waza (the basic techniques). These basic techniques would include blocks, strikes, stances and kicks. Once the student becomes familiar with the basics, the student is then taught softer techniques, employing redirection and parrying. At this point, the student begins to employ these new skills while performing kata, bunkia , and kumite. It is also important that the student understands centering and balance before attempting a technique. Kenpo is a martial art that strives to teach the student self-control, confidence, and self-defense. Initially, Kihon Waza (basic techniques), katas (forms) assist with developing the student's mental concentration and mental discipline. As the students progress, the katas become more challenging in technique, body position, and movement helping them to develop self-control and confidence. Kumite ( sparring) is an exercise in which students are given an opportunity to experiment with their skills developed in Kihon waza. During this time students have the opportunity to develop their reflexes and timing in a controlled encouraging atmosphere for the development of BCC Kobudo Club's practitioners. |
